Baptism of fire for our Sony A99; this is a professional video shoot for our client, Martell during their Pure Gourmet event at the House of Bufori. The A99 performed admirably- pleasing skin tones, no overheating, impressive hi-res LCD and viewfinder, low noise at high ISO, blazing fast autofocus (for videos!).
Previously unheard of in other DSLRs, the A99 has blazing fast and accurate focusing for video shooting. This is even possible in low light situations.
We just love the feel of the buttons on the A99 body. They are easy to reach and protrude slightly out of the body. They are… tactile. This makes it very easy for a videographer to feel for the right buttons during a busy shoot in a dimly lit room and without taking his eyes off the viewfinder.
The 3-way tiltable LCD screen is also another very convenient feature of the A99. Be it an elevated view or low angle, I don’t have to climb a chair or lie on the ground to frame my shots. The fact that the LCD is sufficiently high resolution also makes it possible to check focus.
Boasting a full frame sensor enables the A99 to shoot in very low light conditions. Using low ISO settings produce monochromatic noise which looks like organic looking grain found in film.
My accessories bag now has more space. There is no need for a third party viewfinder or follow focus and lens gear! The A99 can shoot videos right out of the box. Less dependency on accessories mean a lighter and faster setup.
The video above contains 100% Sony A99 video footage. Edited and color graded with Edius 6. In contrast to other DSLR footage, the A99 footage has a surprising amount of latitude. This advantage let us recover details in shadows and highlights. Just remember to use a flat color profile. In the A99, it’s known as Creative Styles.
