To infuse a cinematic quality to this short film we chose the Sony A99 and NEX-6 cameras with Zeiss lens. The editing and color grading was all done in Grass Valley Edius. This film is part of the CSR campaign for the world’s co-leader in wines & spirits, Pernod Ricard Malaysia.

Teaching a class that's lively and inquisitive encourages a lecturer to give over 100% effort... I did.

Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus is a scenic enclave for meditation and study. We are back here to share filmmaking tips and videography techniques to its students.

After my talk, I was immediately approached for internship placements. Gotta love them!

These Mass Communication students are incredibly curious and possess a strong willingness to learn. The class was very lively and this encouraged to impart more of my knowledge to them.

My presentation is equal parts slide show and film viewing. I showed off our films, which included a few exclusive ones that are not uploaded… yet. One of our latest short films is a CSR project on Drinking Responsibly. The students liked this film especially. It’s near completion and will be uploaded very soon.

Inti International University- set in a serene and large campus away from the city.

The students who attended were studying Mass Communication. During this lecture, I showed off our (by now substantial) films shot with the Sony SLT A99.

Here is a simpler SLT A99 setup that we use for interviews in video production.

After our session, we heard that another group of students were shooting a short film upstairs. They were disappointed they couldn’t attend. It looks like we may be heading back to Inti International University again.

The throw of the Z96 is incredible. Don’t go full blast with this little light, you’ll have your subjects raising their hands to shield their eyes. Its brightness is much greater than the LitePanels equivalent.

It’s also a team player- The Z96 can be combined with up to 4 of its brothers to form a powerful studio light. It can transform into a studio light that emits virtually no heat and consumes very little power. Its a force to be reckoned with.

We have a few Z96 in our studio and we’re very pleased with them. We use them for corporate events where run & gun is required. The KDU team with our film producer: Kanae Sakuta (lead actress), Jeannette Wilson (team leader), Farah Liyana, Pureen Tham (our film producer) and Levin Thung.

We are delighted to be working with these talented team of students from KDU University. They have been chosen by our client, Pernod Ricard Malaysia, to produce a short film on Responsible Drinking.

We got our ambulance from First Ambulance who were very helpful. This is important as we want to make the film as realistic as possible.

This film is made for Pernod Ricard’s Corporate Social Responsibility campaign. It is written by the KDU University students and produced by us, WolFang Digital.

Kanae rehearses while Adrian does the lights. The GoPro Hero 3 did very poorly in our night time driving scenes. We'll replace it with the Sony NEX-6.

We planned for a 2 day shoot and cinematography commences tonight! We want to thank Sony Malaysia for their support as well.

The Sony NEX-6 on a double-suction cup mount will be used in our night driving scenes. It performed significantly better than the GoPro Hero3

Amongst the scenes we are shooting include a night club, interior of an ambulance, interior of a car, highways and street scenes. The most challenging scene will be a car collision.

Our Sony SLT A99 on a Glidecam 4000 Smooth Shooter will be used extensively to give viewers an immersive experience.

Our principle cameras will be the Sony SLT A99 and NEX-6. Our Glidecam stabilizer will be used extensively, well as a new follow focus from Edelkrone.

We are once again official event videographers for Pernod Ricard Malaysia, hired to shoot the Royal Salute Polo Cup. Pernod Ricard is the world’s co-leader in wines and spirits. Royal Salute is one of Pernod Ricard’s premium brands.

Oberservation tower vantage point but still very far away. The 70-300mm brought us very close to the action.

Here are some frame grabs from our recent video shoot of the Royal Salute Polo Cup match. These are extracted from the HD video we edited with Edius.

<frame grab from video> Scenes like these unfold between 50 to 100 meters away.

The entire polo match was shot using the Sony 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G telephoto lens. This lens shines for use in outdoor sports, wildlife situations. I don’t recommend this lens for indoor use as it is a little slow (F4.5-5.6). Unless you are willing to compensate with a high ISO, the 70-300mm should be used for brightly lit situations. The Sony G 70-300mm lens worked beautifully at outdoors, at long distances.

One very important word of advice when using a focal length of this magnitude… put it on a tripod, especially when shooting videos. A monopod is close to useless if you don’t have years of practice. Even then, fast moving subjects like a horse blazing after a ball will put you off balance.

Event videographers would benefit greatly from Sony’s SLT cameras. The autofocus helps a lot. In the case of sports videography, it becomes even more crucial- subjects are moving too fast to focus manually.

An additional advantage of the A99 is its ability to shoot in PAL or NTSC. We shot the games at 60 frames per second in NTSC mode. The higher frame rate played back in slow motion when edited in Edius.

Respect your actors and talents and be patient. Always appear confident and professional.

Supporting actors, talents and extras add that much needed authentic feel to your set. The office worker in the background working on his laptop, the young lady talking on her mobile (in the background) on the street. They are all important but they often have no acting experience. So how do you give them a crash course in acting?

Supporting actors/talents, even extras add that much needed authentic feel to your set. They are all important but they often have no acting experience. So how do you give them a crash course in acting?

During a film making session, our producer will always spend about 10 minutes with all the talents and teach them how to conduct themselves during filming. They’ll know what to expect when I call ‘Action’ or ‘Cut’. If we take the time to brief them, even the most inexperienced person can turn out some good results on film.

Our producer, Pureen briefs the actors en masse before the shoot. Such briefings are important to improve actors' performance.

Here are some basic but handy rules on how to direct your actors and talents:

1) Don’t start until I say ‘Action’

Many talents tend to get ahead of themselves especially when they are nervous and will begin their cue before the camera has time to roll. We always tell them to wait until the film director says’ Action!’

2) Never stop until I say ‘Cut’

I’ve experienced this often- talents who think they’re done with whatever they’re supposed to be doing during a scene stop and look around for instructions. If you were in the middle of a good take (scene), that talent’s confused look would ruin it. We tell them to continue doing what comes naturally until the film director says ‘Cut!’
Sometimes the director wants to prolong the take for creative reasons. Whatever it is, the talent has to continue acting until they hear ‘Cut!’

3) Don’t ever look at the camera!

I think is probably the most important of the 4 rules. We want a film to look as natural as possible. Talents must never look at the camera, or the film director. Some talents will pause midway through their act and look at the camera as if for approval. Don’t!

4) This last rule is for new film makers. The iconic cue of: ‘Standby! Lights! Camera! Action!’

As soon as the director calls for ‘Standby!’, the lighting crew reply of ‘Lights On!’. Camera Operators should call back ‘Rolling’. This feedback is crucial. It lets everyone know that this is the real deal.
The director calls ‘Standby!’ The clapperboard person (if available) will call out the scene and slap the clapperboard. Now it’s your turn to yell ‘Action!’

Knowing your gear well makes you a better film director. It helps you communicate better with your crew.

So there you have it, some basic principles on how to direct actors and talents. Remember to be confident and well informed.

It's often more effective to show your actors how you want them to deliver their parts. Lead by example.

Actors (and people in general) tend to perform better when their leaders know their stuff. Taking the time to memorize your scenes and being intimately familiar with your studio equipment is a definite advantage.

Give out compliments when they are due, work well with the rest of your team, show them respect and you may very well be on your way to becoming an accomplished Film Director.

As time goes by, you’ll gain more experience on how to direct your actors. Meanwhile, we hope you’ll find these advice useful. All the best!
